Social Hall Tapestry

The tapestry in the Social Hall depicts a series of traditional Biblical events set in a non-traditional style. Designed by temple member and artist Russell Blanchard in 1980, the canvas measures 10 by 17 feet, weighs over 500 pounds and contains more than a quarter billion stitches. Directed by long-time congregant Carol Maxon, over 50 needlepointers set their fingers to work creating this beautiful art piece in time for the temple’s 20th anniversary. “The tapestry is only as complex as this…it is a pictorial display of the Bible, and at once, is as clear and straightforward and as puzzling and ambiguous as its inspiration,” Mr. Blanchard said at dedication ceremonies for the tapestry at Shabbat Services on January 9, 1981.
