| Hebrew School
is offered on Monday or Wednesday afternoons from 4:30
- 6:00 pm.
We at Temple Jeremiah believe that the Hebrew program is
an integral part of our total education endeavor and over
98% of our students participate in this most important program.
The study of the living Hebrew language provides a dynamic
sense of participation and achievement. The skills necessary
for active and meaningful participation in home observances
and religious services are a central focus of our Hebrew instruction.
Our goals build upon one another:
- To develop familiarity with the Hebrew language
- To develop enthusiasm for the Hebrew language and customs
and traditions
- To develop the ability to read Hebrew
- To develop the joy and obtain the skills for celebration
of the holidays in both the temple and the home
- To obtain a knowledge of prayers for Shabbat and other
Jewish holidays
- To introduce students to a basic conversational vocabulary
- To develop an awareness of the significance and importance
of becoming a Bar/Bat Mitzvah.
Students who elect to become Bar/Bat
Mitzvah are required to complete a minimum of three and
a half years of study in the Hebrew Department prior to the
beginning of the school year in which the Bar/Bat Mitzvah
will occur. Our children are able to conduct an entire Shabbat
service at the completion of their B'nai Mitzvah studies,
as well as chant Torah and Haftarah.
Hebrew I - Aleph
Hebrew begins in third or fourth grade. The students use a
Hebrew primer entitled, Shalom U'vrachah. Through
drill, games and other successful methods of teaching, our
young Hebrew students learn all the letters and vowels and
have command of simple words and phrases. Toward the end of
the school year, the students are introduced to simple prayers
and blessings.
Hebrew II - Bet
Students continue to reinforce their language and prayer vocabulary.
The main text, Hineini, will introduce the student
to the reading of prayers that they have, up until now, been
reciting by rote. Basic grammar and simple conversation are
integrated into the prayer and blessing material. An interactive
CD accompanies the text, supporting the students as they study
at home.
- The Avot-V'imahot
- Yotzer
- Torah Blessing
- MiChamocha
- Hatikvah
Hebrew III - Gimel
We focus primarily on prayers for Shabbat and daily service
from our prayer book. Using Hineini, the students
learn the meanings of prayers and develop an increased comfort
in their reading skills. An interactive CD accompanies this
text as well.
- Kedushah
- The V'ahavta
- Shalom Rav
- Special Blessings for Sukkot and Shavuot
- Sim Shalom

Hebrew IV - Daled
This is an enrichment year for our Hebrew students. There
is a strong emphasis on prayer reading and understanding with
the introduction of weekly Torah passages. Our fourth year
Hebrew students participate in conducting Hebrew School worship
services for the other classes and learn those prayers which
are an integral part of every religious service, yet not necessarily
part of Bar/Bat Mitzvah training. The students are exposed
to the fourth year teachers and spend time with the rabbis,
cantor and educator. Some conversational Hebrew has been added
to this final year.
The curriculum includes:
- The Torah Blessings and taking the Torah out of the Ark
and its return - Baruch Shenatan, Sh'ma, Etz Chaim
- The Shabbat evening Kiddush (complete)
- Birkat Hamazon
- The Haftorah Blessings
- Kaddish
- Adon Olam
- Aleinu
- Havdalah
