Parents Learn About Raising Resilient Children
We all know people who, despite difficult circumstances,
have become happy and successful. How is it that some people
can rely on inner resources in the face of adversity? Based
on findings from his book, Raising Resilient Children,
Dr. Brooks, a clinical psychologist on the faculty of Harvard
Medical School, discussed how to help children and adolescents
deal more effectively with stress and pressure, addressing
such topics as:
- The importance of empathy in understanding and responding
to children.
- The link between self-worth and resilience.
- Why some youngsters have a more difficult time developing
a positive self-image than others.
- The importance of identifying and reinforcing each
child’s “island of competence.”
- Specific strategies to foster self-discipine, self-esteem,
compassion, responsibility, hope and resilience in
our children.

From Anne's Desk
On Sunday, April 8, 2007 many of us had the delightful experience
of hearing Dr. Robert Brooks, a clinical psychologist and
faculty member of Harvard Medical School. The focus of his
presentation was “Raising Resilient Children,” being an empathetic
parent, understanding we can change how we interact with our
children and being less negative and ultimately more loving
and supportive. Dr. Brooks was superb and very well received
by the overflowing crowd of congregants who filled the sanctuary
during Sessions I and II. In like response, Dr. Brooks was
impressed with the parents of Temple Jeremiah – warm, receptive
and large in numbers.
My thanks go to Jani Harris, chair of our Education Committee,
who gave her hands-on support with this endeavor, and to Abby
Lasky and Jody Hyman for their help Sunday morning. Thank
you also goes to our Sisterhood, Brotherhood and clergy for
their help subsidizing this wonderful event.
I
encourage all our parents to go to Dr. Brooks’ website, www.drrobertbrooks.com,
and read his many published articles on temperament, self-esteem,
empathy and discipline (from the word disciple – a teacher).
Call any of our local bookstores and order a copy of his book,
Raising Resilient Children. You will be so glad you
did! Thank you again to each and every one of you for coming
to temple and showing your support. Your response encourages
us to do more programs in this area.
