In keeping with the mission of our Center for Learning, Temple Jeremiah hosts various lecture series throughout the year which are open to the community.

Temple Jeremiah's Adult Education Committee, Dawn Schuman Institute & Other Groups

Temple Jeremiah's Adult Education Committee, frequently in cooperation with such organizations as the Dawn Schuman Institute, offers lectures on topics ranging from "Disengagement from the Gaza Strip" to a review of Mel Gibson's controversial film, "The Passion."

"Modern Jewish Thinkers," April 25, 2010
As part of the Dawn Schuman Institute programs, Rabbi Dr. Joseph Ozarowski, chaplain of the Jewish Healing Network, talked about three prominent 20th century philosophers - Martin Buber, Joseph Soloveitchik and Abraham Joshua Heschel.

"Judaism & Sexuality," April 18, 2010
In cooperation with the Dawn Schuman Institute, Gary Shapiro, Director of the Community Foundation for Jewish Education of Metropolitan Chicago, looked at what Judaism has to say on sexual expression.

In cooperation with the Dawn Schuman Institute, popular lecturer Julie Strauss led a discussion on this controversial topic.

"The Torah: Its Relevance in Our Days," March 10 & 17, 2010
As part of its Torah of Our Own Project, Rabbi Moshe Druin, our Torah scribe, held a two-part lunch and learn series in which he looked at how a 3000 year old book can make sense in the year 2010.

Scholar-in-Residence Weekend, January 8, 9 & 10, 2010
Temple Jeremiah hosted a special weekend featuring Rabbi Dr. Gary P. Zola, Executive Director of the Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives.

"Whose Life Is It Anyway?," December 13, 2009
Rabbi Dr. Joseph Ozarowski, chaplain of the Jewish Healing Network, focused on such topics as abortion and stem cell research as well as end-of-life care from a Jewish perspective.

"Forgiving Dr. Mengele," November 1, 2009
Temple Jeremiah, in cooperation with Dawn Schuman, aired this powerful independent documentary about a shocking act of forgiveness by Auschwitz survivor, Eva Mozes Kor. Filmmaker Bob Hercules led a discussion following the film.

"The Red Tent," October 25, 2009
Congregant Ruth Adler led a discussion of the New York Times bestseller, The Red Tent, which gives a fictionalized version of the little-known Biblical character, Dinah, daughter of Jacob and sister of Joseph.

Social Justice and Advocacy," April 26, 2009
The Jewish Council on Urban Affairs led a workshop which examined how we define social justice and the means to effect change.

"A Guide to the Jewish Spiritual Tradition of Mussar," April 22, 2009
Rabbi Alan Morinis provided insights into the 1000 year old spiritual practice of Mussar.

"Incident at Vichy," April 19, 2009
Congregant Ruth Adler led a discussion of the powerful one-act play, Incident at Vichy, by dramatist Arthur Miller.

"Discovering Jewish Art," April 12, 2009
Well-known art lecturer and teacher Linda Rubin presented a slide lecture on Jewish art throughout the ages.

"Implications for Peace in the Mideast," February 22, 2009
Dawn Schuman and Temple Jeremiah hosted this program on the dynamics of terrorism and counterterrorism.

"In the Family," February 12, 2009
Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered (FORCE) presented a screening of this powerful documentary, "In the Family," chronicling the story of families undergoing genetic testing. Following the film, a panel of experts discussed issues associated with cancer genetics.

"Science and Torah," January 18, 2009
Participants looked at and whether science and religion are in conflict or can be reconciled.

"Jews and Power," November 2 & November 9, 2008
The paradoxical myth of Jews, on the one hand, wielding power world-wide and, on the other hand, being completely powerless was explored in this two-part series.

"Ecology and the Torah," April 15, 2008
Dawn Schuman presented a program on our responsibility to the environment based on Jewish texts.

"Close to Home," April 6, 2008
Dawn Schuman aired the award-winning film, "Close to Home," which looks at two Israeli women soldiers with diametrically opposing views on the Palestinian dilemma and their efforts to resolve their differences in the wake of tragedy.

"The Significance of Jewish Historical Memory: What Have We Forgotten?", December 13, 2007
Scholar Avram Stein from the Herzog Center for Jewish Studies spoke on collective Jewish memory.

The Mighty and the Almighty: Reflections on America, God and World Affairs, May 16, 2006
Over 1200 people were on hand as America's first woman Secretary of State, Dr. Madeleine Albright, discussed her recently released book, The Mighty and the Almighty.


Past Golder Interfaith Lectures

In cooperation with other local houses of worship, Temple Jeremiah annually hosts the Stanley C. Golder Interfaith Lecture Series to promote understanding between the faiths.

Shabbat Service with Anat Hoffman, April 23, 2010;
Anne & Emmett, April 24, 2010

As part of the 2010 Golder C. Interfaith Lecture Weekend, Anat Hoffman, Director of the Israel Religious Action Center, spoke at our Shabbat Service on April 23.

On April 24, the lecture featured the Midwest premier of the play, "Anne & Emmett." Written by Janet Langhart Cohen, the one one-act play featured an imaginary dialogue between two victims of intolerance and hatred, Anne Frank and Emmett Till. The play was followed by a discussion with the playwright, her husband, former Secretary of Defense William Cohen, the director, a relative of the Till family and the cast.

"How Our Traditions Deal with Diversity," May 2, 2009
Our lecture featured a panel discussion moderated by Pulitzer Prize winning columnist Clarence Page. Our distinguished group of panelists included Francis Cardinal George, Archbishop of Chicago, Imam Abdul Malik Mujahid, chair of Sound Vision Foundation, Dr. Alice Hunt, president of the Chicago Theological Seminary, and Rabbi Dr. David Sandmel, Crown Ryan Professor of Jewish Studies at the Catholic Theological Union.

"The Rise of Religious Fundamentalism," May 3, 2008
The lecture featured Judith Miller, well-known author and Pultizer Prize winning reporter, who addressed how fundamentalism has become a powerful force in today's highly charged political arena.

"Jews, Christians and Muslims Partnering for Peace," April 27, 2007;
"The God Factor: Inside the Spiritual Lives of Public People," April 28, 2007

At our April 27 Shabbat Service, Carmi Gillon, mayor of Mevasseret-Zion, a suburb of Jerusalem, and former head of the Israeli Secret Service, spoke about how the three Western religions must collaborate to create peace in the Middle East.

On April 28 keynote speaker Cathleen Falsani, religion columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times and author of The God Factor, spoke on a variety of people, from Barack Obama to Hugh Hefner, she interviewed for their views on God and religion.

"The Challenge to Islam Today," April 29, 2006
Featured speaker was Irshad Manji, author of the international bestseller, The Trouble with Islam Today: A Muslim's Call to Reform in her Faith.

"Evil and Suffering: Where is God to be Found? Our Religions Respond," April 30, 2005
John Callaway, moderator of WTTW's Chicago Tonight, led a lively panel discussion with a cross-section of religious leaders.

"Can We All Get Along? Building Bridges Among Jews, Christians and Muslims in the 21st Century," April 24, 2004
Bruce Feiler, a writer for the New York Times, Washington Post and National Public Radio, spoke on the common beliefs linking Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Mr. Feiler has authored the bestsellers, Abraham: A Journey to the Heart of Three Faiths and Walking the Bible.

"What's Going to Happen in Washington," April 26, 2003
Commentator and Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist William Safire spoke on national politics, including his predictions for the 2004 and 2008 Presidential races.

2000, 2001 & 2002
The lecture series hosted such notable speakers as: Mitch Albom, author of Tuesdays with Morrie; popular author and professor Father Andrew M. Greeley; and author, humanitarian and hostage negotiator Terry Waite.

The Jewish United Fund, in collaboration with Temple Jeremiah, presents a lecture series featuring well-known speakers addressing a variety of contemporary topics.

JUF Brunch & Book Signing, March 14, 2010
Jay Tcath, Vice President of the Jewish United Fund and Executive Director of its Jewish Community Relations Council, spoke on issues facing the Jewish community. Mr. Tcath was filling in for the scheduled keynote speaker, Daniel Levin, author of the bestseller, The Last Ember, who could not make it due to flight delays.

JUF Brunch & Book Signing, March 15, 2009
Keynote speaker was Michael Hirsch, a TV and radio commentator, reporter for international affairs and globalization for Newsweek and author of the internationally acclaimed book, At War with Ourselves.

Dara Horn, National Jewish Book Award winner, talked about her latest novel, The World to Come.

Rabbi Naomi Levy, founder and spiritual leader of the groundbreaking Jewish outreach organization Nashuva, was our keynote speaker.

Fabulous Small Jews, February 12, 2006
Joseph Epstein, one of America's preeminent essayists, spoke on his latest book, Fabulous Small Jews, a collection of 18 stories set in Chicago concerning Jewish men. Over 100 people attended the event.

Ellen Smith, academic historian, museum curator and New York Times culture writer and critic, spoke on the history of Jews in America.

"Rambam's Ladder and Why It Is Necessary to Give," March 21, 2004
Julie Salamon spoke on her latest book, Rambam's Ladder.

Past Interfaith Thanksgiving Service Programs

As a member of the Winnetka Interfaith Council, Temple Jeremiah joins with eleven other houses of worship across the North Shore every Thanksgiving to present a worship service.

2009
Guest speaker at the Community Interfaith Thanksgiving Service at Temple Jeremiah on November 25 was Rabbi Capers Funnye, head rabbi of the 200-member Beth Shalom B’nai Zaken Ethiopian Hebrew Congregation of Chicago, the first African-American member of the Chicago Board of Rabbis and first cousin of Michelle Obama.

2004
The Community Thanksgiving Service at Christ Episcopal Church (Church on the Hill), 784 Sheridan Road in Winnetka featured speaker Robert E. Muzikowski, author of Safe at Home.

2003
The keynote speaker for the November 26 interfaith program was Cardinal Francis George.
