Annual Junior Choir Retreat
Ten members of the Temple Jeremiah Junior Choir participated
in this retreat at Olin-Sang-Ruby Union Institute. A
total of 54 children participated from seven Chicago
area congregations including Am Shalom, Beth Am, Temple
Chai, Congregation Emanuel, Temple Jeremiah, Congregation
Solel and Lakeside Congregation.
The children (and staff) had a wonderful time. Activities
included lots of singing, song writing, Shabbat worship
services, craft projects and, of course, GaGa (Jewish
dodge ball). This year’s retreat theme was "thanks
and praise to God" and the children were divided
into six small groups. They composed songs about giving
thanks. Each group created a wonderful, unique song
using texts from Talmud, Torah and Psalms.
The culmination of the weekend was a concert at The
Park, an assisted living facility in Niles, where the
choir of 54 joined voices to perform their original
songs as well as some other pieces of Jewish music they
learned over the weekend. The audience loved the performance.
It was truly a weekend of music and mitzvah for our
children.
New music was learned, new friendships were formed and
the beauty and serenity of OSRUI were enjoyed by all.
Our ten children were terrific representatives of Temple
Jeremiah. (I was so proud!) Thank you to: Rachel Becker,
Rachel Goldstein, Hope Cohen, Dana Ford, Kayla Fox,
Frannie Novak, Brian Nebolsky, Jessica Nebolsky, Allison
Smith, and Libby Walls.
Michelle Myers, a Religious School teacher, joined
us as a chaperone. Her energy, nurturing spirit and
enthusiasm were invaluable to the children and the staff.
Alan Goodis, our newest addition to the temple staff
and a very talented song leader, was also on the retreat.
His small group of kids composed a wonderful original
song complete with choreography! A great time was had
by all! |
