2005 Outreach Events - Description

Shabbat Afternoon in the Ark

4-legs, 2-legs, no-legs, oh my!! A virtual Noah's Ark set sail inside Temple Jeremiah. Parents and children alike engaged with Rabbi Michelle Greenberg in a discussion of the Torah portion on Noah. Children had no trouble understanding the environmental message in the story, responding generously to the request for donations to Orphans of the Storm animal shelter.

Hoffman's Animal Kingdom then introduced our participants to several creatures that may well have had ancestors on Noah's famous galley. A monkey, dog, hornbill, rabbit, hedgehog and boa constrictor delighted the crowd with their screeches, acrobatics and innate charm. We capped off the afternoon with a song-filled Havdalah service. Special thanks go to Greg and Anne Richards for hosting this delightful event.

Shabbat Across America

Temple Jeremiah joined congregations across the country for this special worship service explaining the various rituals and celebrations around the weekly day of rest.

The program included lively table discussions where participants shared their traditions, asked questions and discussed the week's Torah portion. Rabbi Cohen, Rabbi Greenberg and Cantor Zussman illustrated how to do the Shabbat blessings.

"Welcome to the World My Child" -
Brit Milah: The Celebration of Our Covenant with God

Participants took part in a lively discussion of what is probably the oldest rite in the Jewish faith. Topics included the historical origin and religious significance of the Covenant of circumcision, who can perform the rite, when it is performed, and its significance in view of modern day gender equality. We also talked about equivalent covenant ceremonies for girls without the “Milah” and the practical issues we are faced with as a diverse community in scheduling and celebrating a Bris.

October 30

Outreach Chanukah Party - Chanukah U101

Temple Jeremiah congregants of all ages explored Chanukah traditions, including the miracle of Chanukah, its religious significance, traditions and celebrations. Activities included lighting the Menorah, saying blessings, playing games and making latkes. The evening concluded with our not-ready-for-prime-time players re-enacting the Chanukah story.
