Temple Jeremiah
has adopted the Jewish community of Yerevan, Armenia in the
former Soviet Union. In the past, we have sent clothing and
medical supplies to this impoverished community where Judaism
is just beginning to take root after years of Soviet oppression.
We have received numerous expressions of appreciation since
taking Yerevan under our wing.
The letter below is from Victoria Fayvush who is the daughter
of their congregational president, George Fayvush. To learn
more about our sister congregation or to sponsor a day of
religious school, please contact Rabbi
Greenberg.
Letter from Victoria Vayvush:
Dear Rabbi Michelle Greenberg!
Today we received money sent by you for our school.
Thank you very much. It is very difficult to express our
gratitude, because your help and support are the most important
for as. Without it we can’t work and educate our children
properly, according the bases of Jewish traditions. In this
Sunday will start our lessons. I hope all children, who
were in summer camp, will come to the school (at least 17).
Maybe after Rosh-ha-Shana and Sukkoth new pupils will come
to the school.
Please, tell about our gratitude to people in your
Temple. We always remember that we have many friends in
Chicago.
I hope that in the nearest time my father will be better,
and he will be able to write to you himself.
With best wishes,
Victoria
Currently,
Temple Jeremiah is sponsoring Eduard Greenberg as part of
the World Union for Progressive Judaism's leadership training
program, Machon. Eduard is a native of Berdichev, Ukraine,
a graduate of Solomonov University in Kiev with a M.A. in
Jewish History and studies at Hebrew University in Jerusalem
as part of the Rothberg School for Overseas Students.
Eduard is one of 19 students who will prepare for future
leadership positions through this two-year Machon program.
Machon students and graduates fill in for rabbis. They also
work in summer camps, which are a wonderful breeding ground
for the next generation of Machon students. Connections are
being developed for enhancing Machon students' training through
Russian State University and the government of Israel. By
sponsoring a Machon student, Temple Jeremiah is helping to
expand Reform Judaism throughout the Former Soviet Union.
In 2001, we launched a successful campaign to provide breakfast
to Yerevan's Sunday School children. Not only were we able
to feed 42 children for an entire 52 weeks, our surplus donations
provided funds for their summer camp program.
Each year, our partnership with Yerevan continues to grow.
Contact Dr. Anne
Lidsky to find out how you can help.
