Come
to a Family Havdallah
Saturday, March 20, 2010
4:30 - 6:30 pm
Many years ago I received a havdallah set as a gift. It was my incentive
to get in the habit of doing a havdallah service at home. On Saturday
evening, before everyone went their separate ways, this prayer was the
perfect way to be together and say good-bye to Shabbat as a family. The
word Havdallah comes from the Hebrew word, “l’havdil,” which
means to separate. Havdallah is to the end of Shabbat what the Kiddush
is to the beginning. The Kiddush ushers in Shabbat and Havdallah bids
farewell to Shabbat. It separates the holy Sabbath from the rest of the
work week.
The Havdallah service takes about 5 minutes! Three objects
are needed - the Kiddush cup, spice box and special braided
candle. The Kiddush cup is filled to the top with wine or
grape juice. A blessing is recited. We hope some of the goodness
of Shabbat will spill over into the coming week. The spice
box contains something sweet-smelling like cloves or cinnamon.
Another blessing is recited and the spice box is passed around
as everyone breathes in the sweet aroma. The spices are supposed
to calm our soul because we are sad to say good-bye to Shabbat.
Some say an “extra soul” is added to our lives
during Shabbat and is now leaving.
A blessing is recited as
the multi-wicked candle is lit. The light gives us renewed
energy for the coming week. Traditionally,
we raise our hands toward the flame and watch the light’s
reflection dance on our nails or observe the shadow of our
palms to remind us of separation, this time of light and
darkness. Finally, we recite the havdallah blessing, separating
Shabbat from the rest of the week and extinguish the candle’s
flame in the cup of wine. We wish each other shavua tov,
a good week, and the service ends.
On Saturday, March 20, we will offer a special Pajama Havdallah
experience for families with children 6 years of age and
younger. Come in your PJs and enjoy Havdallah in a memorable
way. We’ll do an art project, sing, hear a story and
do Havdallah! A pizza dinner will follow. There is no charge,
but RSVP to Sheila at 847/441-0202 by March 18 so we can
plan ahead. This will be a great way to spend a Saturday
afternoon. Who knows? After you and your family have experienced
Havdallah, it could become part of your Saturday evening
routine, just like it was for me!
