Light
Dairy Dinner & Tikkun
May 25, 2004
To mark the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai and to honor
the custom of Tikkun Leil Shavuot or staying up
the entire night (leil) of Shavuot and studying with the
community in order to re-experience standing at Sinai, Temple
Jeremiah hosted a dairy dinner and study.
Our theme revolved around "The Power of Memory" in
keeping with the fact that Shavuot is also known as Zan
Matan Torah, the Time of the Giving of the Torah. Our
celebration is a time of remembering this great event and
allowing the memory to guide our actions in the present.
We explored six verses from the Torah calling upon us to
remember six major events in the life of our people, their
significance for the 21st Century Reform Jew, the difference
between remembering and not forgetting and the critical role
that our memory plays in celebrating the Festival of Shavuot.
