Shabbat Shira Service
Shabbat Shira means "Sabbath of Song" and
refers to the song chanted by Moses and the children
of Israel, praising God after they safely crossed the
Red Sea and escaped their life of bondage in Egypt.
To commemorate this event this year, Cantor Amy Zussman
and the temple's Adult Choir, under the musical direction
of David Lornson, presented the life and beautiful music
of the "First Lady of Israeli Song," Naomi
Shemer. |

| Shavuot
Dinner, Service & Tikkun
Shavuot marks the giving of Torah at Mount Sinai. Traditionally,
we study the Book of Ruth, particularly the passage where
Ruth says to her mother-in-law Naomi, "Where you
go, I will go, and where you dwell, I will dwell; your
people will be my people, and your God my God." At
Shavuot, each of us accepts Torah again, reconfirming
our pledge to the community. The Temple Jeremiah
community celebrated this commitment this year with
a dairy dinner, Shavuot Service, including Yizkor, and
Tikkun (study), and cheesecake tasting, along with stories
by congregants of their decision to live a Jewish life.
Jews by Choice and Jews by Birth shared their reflections. |

| Selichot
Worship & Discussion
In preparation for 5767, we take personal inventory,
work to right the wrongs of the past year and pray for
blessings in the coming year. But how do we begin to
immerse ourselves in personal and spiritual revelation
when our backgrounds are so diverse, the struggles of
each day are sometimes overwhelming and our connections
with Judaism and God change as we do?
Temple Jeremiah congregants took part in a dinner,
followed by a short play written by Jeff Bernhardt,
a Jewish educator and professional writer, which explored
four Jewish characters from diverse roots and of diverse
religious practices and beliefs. Played by Temple Jeremiah
congregants, each of these characters brought us closer
to the values and needs of the High Holy Days. Following
the play we shared our own ideas, experiences and preparation
for the Days of Awe. A Havdalah and Selichot Service
concluded the evening's events. |
