  Yom HaShoah Community Memorial

To commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day, Temple Jeremiah, with the sponsorship of the North Shore Fellowship of Rabbis, hosted a community memorial including music written and sung during the Shoah.

It is a mitzvah to remember not only the loss of the estimated six million Jews who perished as a result of Nazi Germany's "Final Solution," but the "Righteous Among the Nations," non-Jews who gave their lives trying to save those persecuted during the Holocaust.

The community gathered to remember all who suffered during those dark times. The commemoration included a Community Memorial Observance and music of the Shoah performed by our cantors and Jewish musicians.

  Shabbat Across America

Temple Jeremiah joined synagogues across North America for a special worship service filled with the sharing of traditions and an exploration of Kavannah (the spiritual intent of our prayers). We enjoyed a catered dinner, generously provided by our Outreach Committee, accompanied by lively table discussions where we shared traditions, asked questions and discussed the week's Torah portion. Rabbi Cohen, Rabbi Greenberg and Cantor Zussman illustrated how to do the Shabbat blessings. A delicious Oneg Shabbat followed.

  Shavuot Dinner & Tikkun

Erev Shavuot

Shavuot marks the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. To commemorate this event, Temple Jeremiah hosted a light dairy dinner, accompanied by a service and Tikkun (study).

Tikkun Leil Shavuot is the custom of staying up the entire night (leil) of Shavuot and studying with the community to re-live the experience of standing at Sinai. Traditionally, we study the Book of Ruth. Ruth said to her mother-in-law, Naomi, “Where you go, I will go; and where you dwell, I will dwell; your people will be my people, and your God my God.” At Shavuot each of us accepts Torah again, affirming this pledge to our community.

Congregants spoke of their decision to live a Jewish life as Jews by Choice and Jews by Birth shared reflections on Ruth's words.

We also offered a program for children ages 3 and up while the adult study took place.

  Selichot

Selichot refers to both the prayers we recite in preparation for the Days of Awe and the service held on the Saturday night preceding Rosh Hashanah. Jeremiahans enjoyed a meal followed by an interactive discussion defining this season in our lives. We looked at the meaning of Teshuvah and how both forgiveness and confession bring us closer to wholeness.
